On January 5, 2004, the US army discharged three soldiers for abusing Iraqi prisoners at a detention centre, Camp Bucca, in Iraq. They should have faced a court marshal but they opted for a non-judicial hearing. A fourth soldier requested and received an "other than honourable" discharge.

The Army said on Thursday october 14, 2004, that a Army criminal investigation has implicated 28 active-duty and reserve personnel in the homicides of two Afghan men detained at the American air base at Bagram in December 2002, and describes potential offenses ranging from involuntary manslaughter to assault to conspiracy. Those named by the investigation include officers -the highest officers are two captains-, noncommissioned officers and enlisted personnel. The names were not publicly released.
